Last year, early 2010, Mel Gibson was in the remake of Martin Campbell's UK tee vee series, Edge of Darkness. Not having seen the original 1985 piece , I was greatly surprised to encounter it on You Tube.
Most critics found the newer version, not as good. I, however, embrace the newer version with Mel. It is tighter and leaner and meaner. It is more American and thusly, more relevant to Americans. The American version also displays a wider socio-economic chasm between the "good guys" and the "bad guys". The bad guys having overwhelming resources at their disposal, whilst the good guys were always fighting an uphill battle. The American version,was more updated, essentially, a working class peasant vs. an all powerful aristocracy. No middle class, as in this UK version where there is, seemingly, hope of overcoming the dark side.
Nevertheless, the essential message is the same. An extremely ruthless military industrial complex, run completely and dangerously amok.

Is it possible that the intelligence officer who released them protected Israel by holding off on some documents? The volume is too large for him to go through them, I think. And most importantly, despite the release and the fanfare and the noise from the White House: there is nothing that is really embarrassing or revealing about the US government. Only embarrassing about US puppets in the Middle East region.

Most of the 414,151 residents living in the danger zone were asleep when the outer wall struck. Thousands of them lost their lives, for no one in South Dade had been evacuated or even advised to evacuate. Instead, residents had been repeatedly informed by local news media that South Dade should expect to experience "50 mph winds".

For some unexplained reason, I found this story frightening, like nothing I have ever read before.

Talal, a comrade and friend who heads a division at a major medical center at well-known US university, sent me this regarding the "visit" by a Hariri tribunal team to the clinic of a Lebanese physician: "Is it not interesting that the International Tribunal sanctions practices in Lebanon that would be banned in the native countries of its investigators and jurists? For example, they went into a clinic in the Southern district of Beirut asking to check on the names and files of a large number of women who attend the clinic. That would not fly in the USA. One cannot just come in, even with legal sanction, and check wholesale on the FILES (containing sensitive personal information) of ALL those that come through (they claimed to start with 17 names but it was made obvious that it was to be an open ended investigation with a free hand to investigate any file in the clinic). Such a act would constitute a serious violation of Medical Privacy laws, unnecessarily exposing not only their names of a large number of individuals but also the details of their medical conditions as well as other private information. This is ILLEGAL under any of a number of medical privacy laws. One is usually presented with a court order to obtain information on a SPECIFIC person, and no other subjects so as to safe guard people's privacy. I am amazed the Physician in question even let them in. She should have been the first to kick them out of the clinic, court order notwithstanding. Shame on the Lebanese government and the Lebanese Order of Physicians for providing cover for such a travesty to take place."

Firstly, let us put to one side the nonsense: The President of Iran’s visit was not about embedding Lebanon as a part of the Iranian state, nor was it about paving the way for any Hizbullah ‘take-over’ of Lebanon; and nor can the visit be described as a ‘provocation’. It was of course self-evidently intended to express defiance towards Israeli military hegemony and to assert a stand of counter-deterrence to any Israeli military threat, but that it is very different from an ‘act of provocation’ deliberately intended to draw an Israeli response. All these claims for the purpose of the visit are just a part of the psychological warfare mounted against Iran, and can be ignored.

I have criticized MacFurquhar's coverage of the Middle East before (and he once responded by sending me insults). But this article covering the speech by Ahmadinajad is a classic case of the propaganda of the New York Times. In other words, the New York Times does not even try to feign objectivity on the Middle East anymore, and its reporters are now licensed to engage in blatant propaganda about Israeli interests. Look at this most irresponsible propaganda piece. I have mocked and criticized the kooky pronouncements of Ahmadinajad (mostly in Arabic but also in English, here). But this is outrageous journalism--if it is journalism. First, the headline. In the printed hard copy of the paper, the headline was "Iran Leader Says US Planned 9/11 Attacks." When I read that yesterday, i could not believe it and immediately planned to blog about it. I went to the internet version and saw that the paper (typically) sneakily changed the headline. Why? Because the headline was quite inaccurate. I dislike Ahmadinajad and I dislike kooky conspiracy theories about Sep. 11, but certainly the speech (which I watched live) did not say what the headline alleged. I don't know what Ahmadinajad thinks in his mind, but he offered three "theories" about Sep. 11 and called for an investigation. So in terms of reckless journalism, the headline certainly was a classic example. And then MacFarquhar, began the piece with this about his speech: "made a series of incendiary remarks." Look at those words. Israeli leaders consistently threaten Lebanon and the Palestinian with destruction and bombings, do you think a New York Times reporter would ever dare to describe Israeli hateful statements as "incendiary"? But you know what? I like this. I like that the New York Times does not even pretend to be a professional media organization anymore. It is all a joke.
